Vogue: I read that Women Talking was introduced to you at a book club meeting. What did you think when you first read it, and what in particular made you want to adapt it? Sarah Polley: I’ve always been a fan of Miriam Toews’ writing and when I read Women Talking, I’m super excited at the idea of people who disagree on such basics coming together and have to admit, grasp. Capture each other’s experiences and find a way forward together. They have to reach a consensus, and that is less and less the case in the world we live in. It gives me an overwhelming sense of optimism. The book also raises such rich and beautiful questions about faith, forgiveness, and social injustice versus individual responsibility. There’s a lot about it that I find really fascinating. I also heard that there is some synchronicity in Frances McDormand contacting her manager about you just as you are contacting her. What were your initial discussions with her like?
